I am excited! I found a new website this week: GoComics. I immediately tried this new source of authentic reading material in my Spanish 2 class.
I expected my students to look at the words and identify the past tense verb conjugations. My students, however, were much more interested in talking about the events in the cartoon and deciding which would use pretérito and which would use imperfecto. I decided to modify my warm-up for the next day by using a wordless comic from Dover Publications free samples.
We went through the frames of the comic and discussed whether each would use pretérito or imperfecto. This activity served as a great mini review of the two tenses before students resumed work on their storybook project.
I plan to browse GoComics.com a lot more in the coming weeks and figure out a way to incorporate the reading material into my classes next year. This initial experiment was a success, and I want to do more. Have you ever used comics in your classes and how?
